A product that is labeled "refurbished" automatically causes us to question it's performance and safety. We suspect that it has had some major wear and question whether it has been restored to an acceptable level of newness.However, a refurbished product is typically not one that has been restored from a state of wear; it is a product that has been returned to its retailer because of a minor imperfection and, therefore, cannot be sold as new. Electrical tools are a class of products where the word refurbished is used in this sense.
The term minor imperfection can sound like a sneaky appraisal of something that is actually a major problem, but in the case of electrical hand tools, the term typically refers to something such as an imperfect paint job, a wider than normal plastic seam, or a slightly tarnished rubber hand grip, meaning that, in terms of utility, the product is literally as good as new and, for that matter, as safe as new.
Reconditioned Tool
Electrical tools begin to show their wear by displaying the following characteristics: wear patterns, looseness, vibration, unusual noises and strange odors, the last four of which could be indicators that the product has become dangerous to use. But there is nothing dangerous about a missing paint chip, which makes refurbished electrical tools, from analogue battery testers to cordless drills an economical purchase.
Among retailers, the term refurbished is synonymous with the term factory-serviced, but it differs sharply from the term reconditioned, which means: To restore to good condition, especially by repairing, renovating, or rebuilding. Across the Internet, numerous discount sites that do not sell reconditioned products offer bargains on refurbished electrical tools. In fact, most refurbished electrical tools still offer a factory warranty, which would not be sensible if the products were of second hand quality.
One popular discount site describes refurbished electrical tools as being devices that customers returned for "any" reason. Even if customers decide that they do not "like" a product, this places it in the realm of refurbishment. After the product is returned, it passes through an examination process where it is checked at least twice for proper working condition before being resold. There is no hard data on the safety of refurbished electrical tools, which almost certainly means that there are not enough complaints about refurbished electrical tools being unsafe to warrant such data.
Everyone knows that when a new car is driven away from the dealership, it immediately loses its sticker price value. If the owner returns less than five minutes later wanting a refund, he or she will receive markedly less than they paid for the car, even though the automobile's performance and safety quality have not diminished. This is a helpful analogy to remember when considering purchasing a refurbished electrical tool. Compared to refurbished electrical tools, the price that one pays for a "new" electrical tool is not paid for a deliverable quality such as safety, but for the pleasing notion that the product is considered new.
